We are an accredited London Living Wage employer!

We are hugely excited to announce that Wings has today become accredited as a Living Wage Employer. Our Living Wage commitment will see everyone working with us receive a minimum hourly wage of £11.05, significantly higher than the government minimum for over 23s, which currently stands at £8.91 per hour.

In London, nearly a fifth of all jobs (17.2%) pay less than the real Living Wage - around 700,000 jobs. Despite this, we has committed to pay the real Living Wage and deliver a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.

The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. Since 2011 the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 300,000 people and put over £1.6 billion extra into the pockets of low paid workers.

Ben Jacob, a Wings rider, said: “As a food delivery rider, the pandemic proved how vital our work is, but it also showed just how vulnerable the lack of guaranteed pay leaves riders at the major delivery platforms.

“Being part of an accredited Living Wage organisation is an important recognition of the work we’ve done at Wings to build an alternative within one of the most exploitative sectors of the gig economy. Every worker should know that they will receive a living wage for the work that they do, but for too long the food delivery sector has refused this basic assurance. I feel lucky to work within an organisation that values the work of its members and guarantees that they are paid fairly.”

Katherine Chapman, Director, Living Wage Foundation said: “We’re delighted that Wings has joined the movement of almost 9,000 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to go further than the government minimum to make sure all their staff earn enough to live on.

“They join thousands of small businesses, as well as household names such as Burberry, Barclays, Everton Football Club and many more. These businesses recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer and they, like Wings, believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay."
